Syllabi
The Humanities Department
posts department syllabi on this page which makes it easy for all faculty
to download and print syllabi and other material on their computer.
These syllabi are generic and require that individual faculty add the
number of days of allowable absences (see
below), course requirements and assignments as well as a
schedule. All syllabi are Microsoft Word files. Just right click on the
course number below and "Save Target As" to your drive or
computer.
Instructors: You may add
to the syllabi or delete where instructed, but you may not delete any
other material unless so instructed.

There
are 3 parts to the syllabus:

All syllabi are expected
to have all three parts. Just add the Humanities Department Student

How
to Determine Absences
Unless
otherwise stated in the syllabus:
In a 14-week term,
students are allowed
4
absences for a class that meets 2 times per week.
In a 12-week term, students
are allowed
3
absences for a class that meets 2 times per week.
In a 10-week term, students are allowed
3 absences for a class that meets 2 times per week.
In a 7-week term, student are allowed 2 absences in any
class.
In a 5-week term,
students are allowed 3 absences in any class. (This includes summer)
In an online class, students
are expected to participate in a regular basis through discussion boards,
chat, projects, or other forms of interaction required by the instructor.
Please do craft an online attendance policy.
Examples: Reid Holland uses discussions as
the basis of his online attendance policy: "If you miss two weeks
worth of discussions, you are automatically dropped from the course. You
will receive a W (Withdrawn) if you miss two discussions before mid term.
After mid term you will receive either a W, or a WF (Withdrawn Failing),
depending on your class average at the time."
Elena Martnez-Vidal's policy uses the tracking
in D2L plus assignments: "If at any time you have 8 missing
assignments in a row, I will withdraw you from the course. If at any
time, you do not log in to the course for over 7 days, I will withdraw you
from the course."
In a hybrid class,
students are expected to participate in a regular basis both online and on
campus. Please craft an attendance policy which includes both the online
and on campus assignments. If you need help, please contact the department
chair.
Students
should read the course syllabus carefully for the instructor's explanation
of required participation. This participation counts as attendance, and
students who do not participate for a total of more than 2 weeks will be
withdrawn from the course.
NOTE:
Some courses such as speech and foreign language courses may have
different attendance policies to accommodate the nature of the course.
Students should refer to the course syllabus for specific information
regarding attendance.
